Mysore Inlay Art Panel — Rosewood Frame | 70 × 55 × 5 cm | 5 kg

Experience the elegance of a centuries-old craft with this exquisite Mysore Inlay artwork, a tradition nurtured under the patronage of the Wodeyar kings of Mysore.

During the reign of Jayachamaraja Wodeyar Bahadur—the last Maharaja of the princely state of Mysore—artisans perfected the technique of inlaying ivory into rosewood and sandalwood. Over time, as materials and cultural practices evolved, the craft transitioned to using treated plastic in place of ivory, and richly colored local woods to create intricate motifs.

A landmark evolution arrived in the mid-20th century, when Master Craftsperson Shokat Ali introduced innovative methods that combined multiple naturally colored woods with modern inlay materials. His work not only transformed the aesthetic of the craft but also made it more accessible for new generations of artisans. In recognition of its cultural importance, Mysore Inlay received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2003, protecting and honoring its legacy.
