Navakankai is also known as the nine man’s Morris or Mills in the West. Navakankari (Sanskrit meaning nine pebbles) is also known as Saalu Mane Ata or Jodpi Ata or Char-Par in Kannada, Navkakri in Gujarati, and Daadi in Telugu. This is an alignment game played by 2 players. Each player gets 9 nine pawns. Detailed instructions provided.
The Channapatna craftspeople make the player pawns using lac-turned, organic-colored pawns. Eighteen pawns ( 9 in each color) are provided for a maximum of two players in this game.Â
The mat measures 15 inches square and is hand-printed and hand-tailored to perfection. It is made by rural women artisans from the Guledagudda region using Khun fabric (hand-spun cotton ).Â
