Pichwai art originated over 400 years ago in Nathdwara, near Udaipur in Rajasthan, and its name comes from "piche" (behind) and "wai" (textile hanging), referring to its traditional placement behind temple deities. Â
Created by the Pushti Marg sect founded by Shri Vallabhacharya in the 16th century, Pichwai art is known for its intricate and visually stunning details. Artists use tools like goat tail hair brushes, coconut shells for colors, and tamarind twig charcoal, with a palette dominated by shades of red, gold, and stone. Authentic Pichwai pieces take several months to complete due to the precision required. Initially crafted to decorate the Shrinathji temple and for storytelling in villages, Pichwai art is now also found in temples and homes, cherished by art lovers and devotees. Â
Themes in Pichwai art include tales from Lord Krishna’s life, such as Shrinathji, the Ras Leela, Radha-Krishna, cows, lotus blossoms, and festivals like Diwali and Holi. Â
