Duryodhana follows the advice of his uncle, the cunning Shakuni, an infamous dice player, and invites Yudhisthira to a game of dice. They know well that gambling is Yudhisthira’s one weakness. Vidura is sent to invite the Pandavas to visit Hastinapura and play a dice game there . Yudhisthira accepts the invitation . Both Dhritharashtra and Yudhisthira ignore Vidura’s warning to avoid the game which may have a destructive consequence. Shakuni plays on behalf of Duryodhana while Yudhisthira plays for the Pandavas.
Initially a small amount of money and jewelry is put at stake. The dice is rolled and Shakuni wins every throw. As the game progresses, Shakuni comes up with the requisite number with his magical dice. Yudhisthira eventually loses his wealth, Indraprastha, his brothers and even his wife.
