Tower of Brahma

History

The Tower of Brahma, considered the original form of the globally known Tower of Hanoi, is a classic puzzle rooted in Indian legend. It is believed that priests in a temple in Varanasi were moving 64 sacred discs across three towers, and when completed, it would mark the beginning of time. At a rate of one move per second, the minimum amount of time it would take to complete the 64 disks would be 2⁶⁴ − 1 seconds or 585 billion years, roughly 42 times the estimated age of the Universe. 

This timeless game blends mythology with deep logical thinking. We have created this game with 9 disks,  2⁹ -1 , a minimum of 511 moves that one can logically solve this puzzle in.

By the accounts of Western historians, the puzzle is said to have been invented in another form called the tower of Hanoi ( 6 disks) by the French mathematician Édouard Lucas, first presented in 1883. 

Contents

This set features 9 beautifully lac-turned wooden discs, crafted from small to large, paired with an ivory wood structure with 3 towers. It is handcrafted by skilled rural wood crafters from Channapatna, known for their traditional woodcraft and finishing techniques.  It includes an instruction booklet with rules and historical context.

Gameplay

• Players: Single-player puzzle, Ages 7+ 
• Objective: Move all discs from one tower to another following simple rules—move one disc at a time and never place a larger disc on a smaller one
• A powerful exercise in logic, sequencing, and patience
  
• By the same logic as above, 9 disks would be 2⁹ − 1 seconds or 512-1 = 511 moves
